Candidate Q&A

Q1

What's your top priority, and what's your plan to achieve it?

Safety residents deserve to feel secure in their homes and neighborhoods. Right now, we are seeing an increase in theft, property crime, and impacts of addiction. People feel that policing is not keeping pace with what is happening around us. That is not acceptable. Public safety is a core responsibility of the municipal government. I would take on a root cause analysis of what is causing the issues. But fundamentally believe that we should ensure that our police services are properly resour

Q2

What is your plan to address homelessness in Moncton?

I would root cause of why there is homelessness in Moncton. Are we attracting people from other regions because of the services we are providing. Are they Homeless? Or do they have an addiction? I believe that Moncton has taken on issues that need to be addressed at the Provincial and Federal level. My plan is to find out why and work with other government bodies and Councilors so that Moncton no longer has to bear the brunt of the costs and impacts of this issue.

Q3

Moncton's policing budget has grown significantly in recent years, yet concern about public safety remains high — how would you approach public safety spending as an elected official?

I would take a root cause analysis of where the policing agency is spending the money to make sure it is supporting the right services so that residents feel safe. Where has the money gone and how can we take a commonsense approach and make some tough calls to ensure we make the needed changes. This is a top priority for me.

Q4

How do you see Moncton growing over the next decade — where should we build, and how should people get around?

I need to understand how the Federal government is going to be operating immigration. This has the biggest impact on population growth. It needs to be gradual so that current residents continue to get the services they require especially regarding health care, jobs and education. Too fast is not good for immigrants or current residents. I would understand more about development before I could answer this question on where we should build. I believe we should be undertaking a feasible review of t

Q5

Which major developments do you plan to support in the next four years?

I am not clear on all the major developments in Moncton so before I provide a response to this I would like to gain a deeper understanding of what is needed and where the funds should go.

Q6

How will you make life more affordable for Monctonians feeling financially squeezed?

I would advocate for a formal review of the taxation model by working with council to pass resolutions that call on the province to re-examine how property taxes are structured, including fairness around assessments and the impact on homeowners. One voice is easy to ignore—an entire council speaking clearly is not. Second, I would work with other municipalities to build a unified voice. This is not an issue unique to our city. When municipalities come together and push collectively, it puts

Q7

Where do you think the city can generate new revenues or find cost savings?

Moncton has increased its tax base significantly over the last couple of years based on new housing development and property taxes. We need to figure out where the waste is and make some tough decisions to cut it. This would be one of my first priorities.

Q8

What's a decision Moncton council has made in the last four years that you disagreed with, and what would you have done differently?

Moncton recently approved a $250K vandalism fund for those who have been impacted by the crime downtown. I believe this is a band aid. I believe there are better ways to spend this money such as policing and figuring out the root cause of the crimes.

Q9

Outside of the issues above, what's one thing you'll be focused on that voters might not expect?

Ward 3 has congestion in traffic, and this is something I can help with. As we grow, our transportation infrastructure must also grow, and we are not keeping pace. The traffic jams going into and out of the North End of Moncton. Also the Smell in the north end needs to be fixed. We have given the city and trans aqua enough time to get this done. Over the last 4 years there has been little progress on this issue.

Q10

Tell us something about yourself that voters wouldn't find on your campaign website.

Pragmatic, analytical, hardworking and process improvement background. I am inspired to run to make real change.

Q11

Final word?

I want to say Thank you to all the candidates that have put their name forward. Moncton has a lot of potential and I want to ensure that it continues to be one of the safest and most vibrant places to live.
